FRANCIS LAPP'S BUSINESS OF INNOVATION:

TRANSFORMING YACHTING WITH SUNREEF YACHTS

The visionary behind clean superyachts, Francis Lapp drives Sunreef superyachts expansion with the sale of a new 35-meter Eco yacht, joining an order book that now also includes three 43-meter electric catamarans.

In 2002, Francis Lapp, a passionate sailor and visionary entrepreneur, took an unconventional route into the yachting industry by founding Sunreef Yachts. At a time when sceptics doubted the market for luxury catamarans, Lapp went against the grain by establishing a shipyard in Gdańsk, Poland.

Over two decades later, Lapp continues to steer the company to new heights, exemplified by the recent sale of a 35M Eco yacht, adding to an already impressive order book featuring three 43M electric catamarans. These milestones are part of Sunreef’s broader strategy to expand its superyacht offering while maintaining a strong focus on sustainability and innovation. Today, Sunreef Yachts stands as the youngest shipyard among the world’s top superyacht builders and is the only catamaran builder included in this prestigious ranking.

From the outset, Lapp’s mission was clear: to design and produce sailing and power multihulls that combine innovation, flexibility, and quality with a focus on sustainability. “In my business life, I’ve always liked to do things differently,” Lapp explains. “With Sunreef Yachts, I wanted to redefine what cruising catamarans are all about.”

Despite challenges along the way, Lapp’s unwavering determination has fueled the company’s growth. From its original facility in Gdańsk, Sunreef Yachts has expanded to three global locations, including a state-of-the-art 65,000-square-metre shipyard in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE. The company’s global sales network has also grown to meet increasing demand.

Innovating for a sustainable future

Sunreef Yachts owes much of its success to Lapp’s commitment to innovation. The brand has seamlessly merged environmental responsibility with luxury and performance, attracting high-profile clients such as tennis legend Rafael Nadal and Formula One champions Fernando Alonso and Nico Rosberg.

One of the company’s most notable achievements is the Sunreef solar power system. As the first builder to integrate ultralight photovoltaic panels into the composite structure of its yachts – including the roof, hulls, and masts – Sunreef Yachts has revolutionised renewable energy in yachting. This innovation is central to the Sunreef Yachts Eco line, a collection of power and sail catamarans offering clients real, sustainable solutions.

A milestone year

2024 marked a pivotal year for Sunreef Yachts with bestselling models such as the Sunreef Power Eco, the 100 Sunreef Power, and the ULTIMA 55 receiving multiple awards. Lapp himself earned prestigious accolades, including the Sustainability Leader award at the Yacht Style Awards in Singapore, and the Personality of the Year award at the World Yachts Trophies during the Cannes Yachting Festival.

Additionally, the brand celebrated a significant technological breakthrough with the completion of the composite hull infusion for the new Sunreef 43M Eco. Not only is this the world’s largest eco-electric catamaran, it also represents the most ambitious single-shot hull infusion project in the yachting industry.

Shaping the future of yachting

Electric Eco models now comprise 40% of Sunreef’s production. Beyond the inaugural Sunreef 43M Eco, two additional units are under construction, alongside other cutting-edge models like the Sunreef 35M Eco and Sunreef 100 Eco. Many clients, including the owner of the conventionally powered Sunreef 102 Ipharra, are transitioning to the Eco line, drawn by the innovative blend of solar technology and silent, energy-efficient operation.

“Electric thrusters are functional, simple, and require less maintenance,” he explains. “The ability to make the ‘hotel’ systems – lighting, air conditioning, and galley – autonomous and silent through solar panels and batteries represents a true advancement in energy efficiency and onboard comfort.”

A trusted visionary

Industry accolades provide welcome recognition, but what really matters for any business is customer opinion. A high proportion of Sunreef owners are repeat clients and the loyalty of its clientele speaks volumes about the brand’s success. Returning to upsize or transition to the Eco line, many owners cite admiration for Lapp’s visionary leadership.

“Francis is an example of vision, boldness, and energy,” says the owner of Ipharra. “He has reshaped naval creations over the last two decades, crafting catamarans that appeal to both seasoned sailors and newcomers. I trusted him to build an extraordinary vessel once, and I trust him again to create a groundbreaking yacht.”

Under Francis Lapp’s leadership, Sunreef Yachts continues to challenge conventions and set new standards in the luxury yachting industry, proving that sustainability and innovation can go hand in hand with elegance and performance.
