Introducing Bar ALTA: ALTA’s pintxos-style little sister, arriving this June

The ground floor of ALTA in Soho will become Bar ALTA from Tuesday, June 23rd, offering guests a more casual style of dining inspired by the pintxos culture of Northern Spain. The restaurant’s first-floor dining room will remain unchanged, and continue to welcome diners for the original ALTA menu, elevated sharing dishes centered around the charcoal grill.

Head Chef Robbie Jameson (formerly Head Chef of HUMO), who joined ALTA in May, has led the development of the new concept, drawing on his experience of cooking over fire, and passion for the convivial bar culture renowned on the continent, most prominently the Basque Country, where food and drink are intrinsically linked. Bar ALTA will allow for a more spontaneous and fluid style of dining, welcoming both reservation and walk-ins, and will also extend to the restaurant’s ground-floor terrace space.

The Bar ALTA menu will offer a more casual selection of dishes, including daily specials, with bites such as Grilled Flatbread with Green Romesco & Manchego, Spiced Cecina with Kampot Peppercorn Oil, and Padrón Peppers with Mint, Sour Cream & Pickled Chilli. Larger plates such as A4 Wagyu with Marmite, Honey & Espelette Pepper and Corn-Fed Chicken with Fermented Chilli & Chicken Crumb are designed to be shared. [Sweet dishes to be added.

To accommodate Bar ALTA’s relaxed dining style, the restaurant's ground floor is being transformed to include additional high-top and counter seating with increased views of the kitchen, allowing guests to get closer to the experience and more interaction between diner and chef. The 20-seat terrace has also been refreshed, incorporating additional high tables and banquette seating.

Drinks will remain central to the Bar ALTA experience, with a cocktail list that continues the restaurant's signature style of savoury, food-led serves inspired by Spanish drinking culture. Wine and craft cider will also remain key pillars of the offering, with the list shared across both Bar ALTA and the upstairs restaurant. At Bar ALTA, there will be a greater emphasis on wines by the glass, allowing guests to explore a broader range of styles in a more casual and accessible way, alongside a rotating selection of vermouths and sherries. Operating from 12–10pm Tuesday-Saturday, and 5-10pm on Sunday, Bar ALTA is designed to capture the relaxed aperitif culture synonymous with Spain, offering guests the opportunity to drop in for a late-afternoon drink and a few snacks, or for an impromptu long lunch with friends.

Alongside Bar ALTA, Robbie Jameson will continue to oversee the menu served upstairs, where guests can enjoy ALTA's charcoal-led cooking, inspired by Northern Spain. This includes new summer dishes to include Highland Lobster rice, Iberico & smoked cheddar croquettes and Oak smoked Yellowtail & Ajoblanco, alongside menu favourites such as the Txistorra, the Squid, Lardo & Vizcaína Sauce, and Chocolate & Olive Oil. This year, ALTA was recognised in the Michelin Guide, and nominated for Best New Opening at the National Restaurant Awards.

Artem Login, Founder of MAD Restaurants, commented:

"With Bar ALTA, we wanted to introduce another way to enjoy the restaurant—something more relaxed and spontaneous, and to complement the ALTA people know and love, which will continue to be offered upstairs. Whether it's a couple of small bites and a vermouth on the terrace, or a table full of dishes shared with friends, Bar ALTA is designed to capture the energy and conviviality of the bars you'll find across the Basque Country. Summer is the ideal time to introduce this new offering to Soho and Kingly Court.’

Bar ALTA: Open Tuesday-Saturday (12pm-10pm) & Sundays (12pm-5pm).

ALTA: Open Tuesday-Sunday (2:00pm-2.30pm & 5.30pm-9.30pm)
