Royal Ballet Principal Natalia Osipova to make her West End debut in The Standard of Living

Royal Ballet Principal dancer Natalia Osipova is set to make her West End debut this autumn, taking on the role of celebrated Russian ballerina Lydia Lopokova in The Standard of Living, a major new play by James Graham based on the life of John Maynard Keynes. Opening at Theatre Royal Haymarket for a strictly limited 12-week run from 21 September to 12 December 2026, the production brings together one of the world’s most acclaimed dancers, one of Britain’s finest stage actors, and one of the country’s leading contemporary playwrights.

Osipova will appear opposite Olivier Award-winning actor Rory Kinnear, who stars as Keynes, the radical economist, Bloomsbury Group figure and one of the twentieth century’s most influential thinkers. Directed by Nicholas Hytner, The Standard of Living promises to explore not only Keynes’s extraordinary public life, but also the private relationships, artistic friendships and cultural passions that helped shape his legacy.

Lydia Lopokova was far more than Keynes’s wife. A celebrated dancer with Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, she became one of the defining figures of modernist ballet and played a significant role in the development of British dance. Together, Keynes and Lopokova were instrumental in establishing The Camargo Society, which supported the early careers of British ballet pioneers including Ninette de Valois, Marie Rambert and Frederick Ashton.

Keynes himself is remembered as one of the great architects of modern economic thought, helping to build a new financial model in the aftermath of the First World War and later becoming a driving force behind arts funding in Britain. He was also instrumental in bringing Sadler’s Wells Ballet, now The Royal Ballet, to the Royal Opera House in 1946. The production reunites some of British theatre’s most respected creative names. James Graham, whose work includes This House, Dear England and Sherwood, brings Keynes’s life to the stage under the direction of Nicholas Hytner, whose credits include The History Boys, One Man, Two Guvnors and Giant. Set design is by Olivier Award winner Bob Crowley, known for his work on Giant, The Inheritance and An American in Paris.

Speaking about her West End debut, Natalia Osipova said: “It’s a fantastic honour to be making my West End debut in The Standard of Living with such an incredible line-up of creatives and performers. Lydia Lopokova was a pivotal figure in ballet history, bridging Diaghilev’s legendary Ballets Russes and the development of British ballet last century, and I can’t wait to explore her character.”

Kevin O’Hare, Director of The Royal Ballet, added: “I’m thrilled that Natalia will be making her West End debut in The Standard of Living. She has excelled in many of our most powerful dramatic ballets and recently surprised audiences with the range of her acting ability in her dance theatre work The Exhibition, presented in the Linbury Theatre earlier this Season. Natalia is perfectly cast as Lydia Lopokova, and I look forward to audiences experiencing her distinctive artistry in what promises to be a remarkable role.”

Hytner also praised the collaboration, saying: “I’ve followed James Graham’s brilliant career with admiration and excitement since I commissioned his break-out hit This House for the National Theatre in 2012. This wonderful play presses all my buttons so I couldn’t be happier to resume our collaboration, and to work again with the great Rory Kinnear, and to bring the astonishing Natalia Osipova to the West End.” During the run, Osipova will also perform her scheduled performances with The Royal Ballet in Kenneth MacMillan’s Manon, although she will no longer appear in MacMillan’s Song of the Earth, part of the previously announced Visionaries programme.

The Standard of Living will be produced in the West End by Brian & Dayna Lee and Nicholas Hytner, with Len Blavatnik & Danny Cohen for Access Entertainment. Mark Rubinstein is Executive Producer and General Management is by Short Street Productions Ltd. For lovers of theatre, ballet and British cultural history, The Standard of Living looks set to be one of the most intriguing West End openings of the year — a story of art, economics, ambition and legacy, led by a dancer whose own stage presence has long transcended the boundaries of ballet.
