Royal Berkshire
A Tranquil Luxury Retreat in the Heart of Ascot
There are moments in travel when what you are searching for is not grandeur, nor spectacle, but something quieter, something more intimate, a place that allows you to properly switch off, to slow down, and to reconnect not only with your surroundings but with those you are travelling with. Royal Berkshire Hotel delivers precisely that, a country house hotel that understands the value of tranquillity, of space, and of a kind of understated luxury that feels both personal and deeply considered.
Set within beautifully kept grounds on the edge of Ascot, the Royal Berkshire immediately feels welcoming, its red-brick façade and classic proportions offering a reassuring sense of heritage without ever feeling imposing. There is an ease to its presence, a quiet confidence that sets the tone for the entire stay. This is not a hotel that seeks to overwhelm, instead it invites you in, encourages you to settle, and then gently reveals its charms over time. What defines the Royal Berkshire most clearly is its atmosphere. It is, at heart, a tranquil place to stay, equally suited to couples seeking a peaceful escape as it is to families looking for a refined yet relaxed countryside retreat. There is a softness to everything here, from the way the gardens unfold into open lawns to the gentle rhythm of the day that never feels hurried or prescribed. It is the kind of place where time stretches just enough to allow you to properly enjoy it.
For us, travelling as a family, this balance was particularly striking. Our daughter immediately took to the grounds, the expansive lawns becoming her playground in the warm sunshine. There is something wonderfully nostalgic about watching a child run freely across such a setting, surrounded by greenery, laughter carried lightly on the air. Garden games dotted across the lawn added to the charm, offering simple pleasures that felt entirely in keeping with the hotel’s character. It is rare to find a luxury property that caters so effortlessly to both adults and children without compromising on either experience, yet the Royal Berkshire manages it with quiet assurance.
Our room was, in every sense, glorious. Spacious, beautifully appointed, and thoughtfully designed, it offered far more than simply a place to sleep. The view from the window stretched out across the grounds, a constant reminder of the calm that defines the estate, while inside, the room unfolded into a space that felt almost residential in its comfort.

What truly elevated the experience was the inclusion of a dedicated sitting room and a proper dining table, elements that transformed the room from accommodation into something far more luxurious. It allowed us to live within the space rather than simply occupy it, to sit together, to relax, and to enjoy the surroundings at our own pace. This is the kind of detail that makes a stay memorable, not through extravagance, but through thoughtfulness.
The furnishings were rich without being overbearing, the palette calm and inviting, and every element seemed designed with comfort in mind. It is a room that encourages you to linger, to take that extra moment, to enjoy the view, to appreciate the quiet. In many ways, it perfectly encapsulates what the Royal Berkshire does so well, delivering luxury not through excess, but through a genuine understanding of how people want to feel when they are away from home.
Dining at the Royal Berkshire is centred around its in-house restaurant, Fork, and it is here that the hotel truly comes into its own as a culinary destination. From the moment you sit down, there is a sense that the food has been crafted with care, the menu shaped by the seasons and grounded in quality ingredients. The experience begins with a feeling of ease, service that is attentive yet relaxed, allowing the food to take centre stage. The menu itself strikes a fine balance, offering dishes that feel both refined and approachable, each one executed with confidence.
The wild mushrooms on sourdough were a particular highlight, earthy, rich, and beautifully composed, a dish that speaks to the quality of its ingredients as much as the skill of its preparation. The steak fillet, cooked to perfection, delivered exactly what one hopes for, depth of flavour, tenderness, and a simplicity that allows the quality of the produce to shine. The sea bass, delicate and expertly prepared, brought a lighter note to the meal, its freshness evident in every bite.

What stands out most, however, is the consistency. Every dish felt considered, every plate delivered with care, and the overall experience was one of quiet excellence rather than showmanship. The cocktails, too, deserve mention, crafted with precision and offering a perfect accompaniment to the meal, adding a further layer of enjoyment to the evening.
Perhaps most telling was how well our daughter was catered for. It is often in these moments that a hotel reveals its true character, and here the Royal Berkshire excelled. There was a genuine effort to ensure that she felt included, that her experience was just as important as our own. It is this attention to detail, this willingness to go that extra mile, that elevates a stay from enjoyable to truly memorable. Beyond the room and the restaurant, the hotel continues to impress through its grounds. The gardens are not vast in the sense of overwhelming scale, but they are beautifully maintained, offering a sense of space that feels entirely sufficient. There are corners to explore, paths to wander, and quiet spots to sit and simply take in the surroundings.
The lawn, in particular, becomes a focal point, especially in good weather, where guests naturally gather, some enjoying drinks, others simply soaking up the sunshine. It is here that the Royal Berkshire feels most alive, not in a loud or bustling way, but in a gentle, sociable rhythm that reflects the character of the hotel itself. As the day moves into evening, the atmosphere shifts subtly, the light softens, and the house takes on a different kind of warmth. There is a sense of retreat, of drawing in, of settling into the comfort that the hotel provides so effortlessly. It is in these moments that you truly appreciate the balance that has been achieved, a property that feels both refined and relaxed, luxurious yet entirely approachable.

What the Royal Berkshire does so well is create an environment that feels natural. Nothing feels forced, nothing feels overly curated, and yet everything works in harmony. It is a hotel that understands its identity and delivers it with confidence.
For couples, it offers a peaceful escape, a place to unwind, to enjoy good food, and to spend time together in a setting that encourages exactly that. For families, it provides space, comfort, and a level of attentiveness that ensures everyone feels welcome. Few hotels manage to strike this balance so effectively, and it is here that the Royal Berkshire quietly excels. As we left, what stayed with us was not any single moment, but the overall feeling of the stay. A sense of calm, of being well looked after, of having experienced something that felt genuine and unpretentious. It is easy to be impressed by scale, by spectacle, by overt displays of luxury, but it is far more meaningful to find a place that delivers comfort, care, and quality in such a natural way.
The Royal Berkshire may not shout for attention, but it does not need to. It offers something far more valuable, a refined, tranquil retreat that understands the art of hospitality at its most human level.
