We were fortunate enough to stay in the stunning Sunset Suite, and it is here that Middle Eight truly reveals what it does best. The sitting room is beautifully arranged, giving the suite a proper residential quality. It is the kind of space where you can comfortably unwind after a day exploring Covent Garden, enjoy a drink before dinner, or simply sit quietly and take in the pleasure of being somewhere special.  The creative bar area adds another layer of charm, bringing a little private members’ club elegance into the room. It gives the suite personality and makes it feel designed not just for sleeping, but for living.


Then there is the bathroom, which is wonderfully large and beautifully finished. In a great hotel suite, the bathroom matters enormously. It should feel indulgent, calm and considered, and the Sunset Suite delivers exactly that. The addition of a make-up area is another intelligent touch, especially for those preparing for an evening in London’s theatreland or a dinner downstairs at Sycamore. Everything about the suite has been arranged with real thought, from the practical details to the overall sense of glamour.

The bedroom itself is tremendous. Centred around a king-size bed, it offers that most important hotel luxury: proper rest. The room feels calm and deeply comfortable, with enough style to remind you that you are staying somewhere special, but enough softness to make it easy to relax fully. After the movement and excitement of Covent Garden, returning to the Sunset Suite feels like stepping into your own private sanctuary above the city. And why is it called the Sunset Suite? It is a space the whole family can enjoy, whether for a quiet morning coffee, an afternoon pause between adventures, or a beautiful drink as the sun begins to lower over the city. Sycamore, the hotel’s in-house restaurant, is a wonderful expression of modern Italian-inspired dining, with a menu that offers warmth, generosity and sophistication. Like the hotel itself, it feels stylish without being overly formal, making it just as suitable for a relaxed lunch as it is for a more celebratory dinner.

The small plates and starters offer plenty of temptation, and we can highly recommend beginning with the King Prawn Skewers, Tomato Bruschetta or Sun-Dried Tomato Hummus. Each brings something different to the table, yet all share a sense of freshness and care. The King Prawn Skewers are bright, satisfying and beautifully suited to sharing, with chilli and lime giving them lift and energy. The Tomato Bruschetta is one of those dishes that depends entirely on the quality of its ingredients, and here it delivers beautifully, with basil and stracciatella cheese bringing freshness and richness in perfect measure.

The Sun-Dried Tomato Hummus is another excellent choice, full of Mediterranean warmth and flavour. Served with homemade focaccia, it has the relaxed pleasure of a dish designed to be enjoyed slowly at the table. These starters set the tone for the meal wonderfully. They are not overworked or overly complicated. Instead, they offer clear flavours, excellent presentation and the sense that Sycamore understands the pleasure of good ingredients treated well.

For the main courses, we were swept away by the Prawn and Courgette Spaghetti, the Sycamore Smash Burger and the 21 Days Dry Aged 10oz Sirloin Steak with thin fries. Each dish was superb in its own right and together they showed the range of the kitchen. The Prawn and Courgette Spaghetti was luxurious yet delicate, with the sweetness of the prawns balanced beautifully by the freshness of the courgette and the richness of stracciatella cheese. It was a dish full of aroma and elegance, the kind of pasta that feels indulgent without becoming heavy.

The Sycamore Smash Burger brought a more playful but equally satisfying note to the table. Served with salad, tomato, orange mayonnaise, provola cheese and thin fries, it had all the comfort one wants from a great burger, but with enough refinement to feel entirely at home in a hotel restaurant of this calibre. The flavours were rich, the presentation excellent, and the whole dish had that wonderful quality of being both familiar and elevated.

The 21 Days Dry Aged Sirloin Steak was, quite simply, a triumph. A good steak requires confidence, and this one arrived with all the depth and character one would hope for. Served with thin fries and a red wine reduction, it was rich, beautifully cooked and full of flavour.  It felt luxurious in the best sense: generous, satisfying and quietly impressive. For those who enjoy a classic steak dinner, this is a dish that deserves serious attention.
Dessert at Sycamore is also not to be missed. Our choices were the Vanilla Pannacotta, the Chocolate and Raspberry Fondant and, of course, ice cream. The Vanilla Pannacotta offered that elegant simplicity which, when done properly, is one of the great pleasures of Italian dining.  Smooth, delicate and beautifully balanced, it was a refined end to the meal. The Chocolate and Raspberry Fondant, meanwhile, was a gastronomic sensation, rich and decadent, with the raspberry cutting through the chocolate to create a beautifully judged finish. The ice cream brought a final note of pure pleasure. Sometimes the simplest desserts are the ones that complete a meal most naturally, and this was exactly that: cool, comforting and beautifully suited to the mood of the evening. 

Together, the desserts ensured the meal ended on a high, with a sense of indulgence that felt entirely in keeping with the wider Middle Eight experience. The bar at Middle Eight deserves equal praise. The cocktail menu takes inspiration from the hotel’s musical and cultural heritage, offering drinks that feel both theatrical and carefully composed.  These are not just cocktails placed on a menu for effect; they are part of the hotel’s character. Each one seems to offer its own rhythm, its own personality and its own sense of occasion.

We can highly recommend the After Eight Smoke, Choco Swing and Tipsy Ballerina. The After Eight Smoke is a showstopper, bringing drama, depth and a wonderfully smooth sense of after-dark glamour. 
It is the sort of cocktail that feels made for a hotel like Middle Eight: stylish, memorable and just a little mysterious. The Choco Swing offers a richer, more indulgent note, playing beautifully with dessert-like tones while still remaining sophisticated. The Tipsy Ballerina is another standout, with a lighter, more lyrical character. It feels elegant, charming and perfectly suited to the surroundings.  What makes the cocktails at Middle Eight so enjoyable is that they each offer something slightly different on the idea of the modern classic. They are creative without losing balance, expressive without becoming overwhelming, and beautifully presented throughout.

Breakfast is another delight. Middle Eight understands that a great London adventure begins properly in the morning, and its breakfast offering ensures guests start the day in exactly the right way.  With both continental and cooked-to-order options available, there is something for every mood. Whether you want to begin lightly with fruit, pastries and coffee, or settle into something more substantial before exploring the city, breakfast here feels calm, polished and generous.

That matters enormously in a hotel of this kind. A good breakfast is not just a meal; it sets the pace of the day. At Middle Eight, it allows you to step into London feeling well looked after, whether you are heading to meetings, the theatre, shopping, galleries or simply wandering through Covent Garden’s handsome streets.
