BENBECULA PRIVATE CASK PROGRAMME OFFERS RARE STAKE IN HEBRIDEAN WHISKY HERITAGE

A new Scottish distillery has launched its private cask programme, offering a limited number for a rare ownership opportunity, which is rooted in authentic Hebridean provenance.

Benbecula Distillery, located off the west coast of Scotland and part of the Outer Hebrides, was founded in 2024 by local crofter Angus MacMillan, whose mission is to craft outstanding whisky while promoting the stunning island which brings its unique flavour.

The exclusive and limited cask offering combines craftsmanship, with a high-end ownership experience alongside the opportunity to become part of the distillery’s early story.

Angus said: “This is the first distillery on the island, and our aim is to produce a distinctive and highly anticipated premium whisky with a compelling legacy behind it. We are releasing a small number of casks, prior to releasing our first single malt – so there is an immense sense of exclusivity and an opportunity to become part of our journey in its formative years.

“However, this isn’t just an investment into a sought-after contemporary single malt; it’s a connection to the distillery, the people making this whisky, and the islands themselves. It's also a tribute to my forebearers and their hard work to support the region – something which I'm keen to uphold at Benbecula and provide economic prosperity for these remote islands that are precious to us all.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming people to the Benbecula cask programme, where they can play a part in the exciting resurgence of this beautiful and welcoming place and be involved in the distillery’s story for generations to come.”

The limited release of private casks allows customers to purchase the ‘Spirit of the Hebrides’ which brings together the character, climate and culture of the island. Each cask has been curated by master distiller, Brendan McCarron, renowned for his work at Glenmorangie, Ardbeg, Tobermory, Deanston and Bunnahabhain.

Angus added: “Brendan’s impressive experience and knowledge is propelling our cask programme to new heights. His approach focuses on balance, textures and long-term maturation, helping shape the future style of Benbecula whisky and producing a spirit which is completely unique to us.”

The single malt is created using local ingredients and incorporates essential aspects of island life, including the revival of ancient distillation techniques.

Seaweed is foraged from the island’s shores and used to enrich the inclusion of Bere barley in the recipe, the oldest known strain of barley dating back over 6,000 years which is also grown on the founder’s croft. This, added to the traditional heather peat used during the malting process, produces a balanced and soft to medium peated single malt whisky which has a layered and aromatic smokiness and floral notes. There's also a distinctive coastal flavour with a hint of salt to produce a spirit that is uniquely Hebridean.

Brendan said: “Benbecula’s spirit has a character that is unmistakably its own, with complex layers of flavour and aroma. Each cask in this offering has been selected to build on that character rather than overwhelm it, giving owners four distinct and exciting paths through maturation.”

The casks are stored in the distillery’s bonded warehouse and cask owners will in time be able to choose whether they bottle the contents of the cask, sell, transfer or continue to hold the cask.

Every private cask owner becomes a member of the Benbecula Comunn, which includes seven years of insured cask storage in the bonded partner warehouse, a bottle from the inaugural release, lifetime distillery visits and ongoing access, permanent recognition on the Cask Owner Wall, priority access to selected limited releases, invitations to private distillery events, a 10% discount on distillery products, complimentary lunch on the first distillery visit and quarterly updates.

The casks include:
